Ferguson Fellow (2007-09):
Motaz Qadan, BSc (Hons) MBChB MRCSEd

Dr. Motaz Qadan joined the Price Institute as a research fellow in the Surgical Infection Laboratory in September 2007. He is the first Ferguson Fellow jointly sponsored by the James and Emmeline Ferguson Endowment and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

A graduate of the University of Edinburgh Medical School, Qadan says he learned about the fellowship at Price Institute after completing his Basic Surgical Training (BST) in Edinburgh. "I was attracted to Price because of its reputation for excellence in surgical research, and because it offers an outstanding PhD program with mentors who provide you with guidance every step of the way."

While participating in the laboratory's ongoing research, Qadan hopes to determine what factors predispose certain patients to developing wound infections and what the in vitro effects of different variables—i.e., temperature change, glucose levels, and oxygen concentrations—have on the immune response. "If we can ascertain the optimal conditions needed for healing and recovery, we may be able to prevent wound infections in patients undergoing surgery," he explains.

Qadan looks forward to an academic career in urology where he can apply what he has learned at the bench to the bedside. He also hopes to foster the careers of future surgeons.

Outside the laboratory, Qadan spends his time engaged in sports and traveling the globe with his wife.
